The city location is in the upper Amazon River basin. The population is estimated to be approximately 426,558 as of 2010.

Located at the border of Rondonia and Amazonas state, the city is an important trade centre of 'cassiterite', with the mining of this mineral representing the most important economic activity in the region, as well as being the transportation and communication centre for the state.

It is also located on the eastern shore of the Madeira River, one of the main tributaries of the Amazon River, and is also Rondonia's largest city.

The municipality occupies most of the border between Amazonas and Rondonia, and is consequently the most western and northern city in the state.
