Itamaraca island is situated on the North East coast of Brazil in Pernambuco State.

Access to the island is simple using the major BR-101 highway from either Recife or Joao Pessoa.

The BR-101 is the main coastal highway providing access to the coastal cities along the east coast of Brazil, and at present, is undergoing  major upgrades, many of which will be completed by 2012, meaning that drive time will be drastically reduced between most of the Brazilian capital cities in the North East region.

Itamaraca island is a charming place to live or holiday offering peace and tranquility and at the same time not being far away from Recife, which is the capital city of Pernambuco State (PE).

Itamaraca island is separated from the mainland by the ‘Canal de Santa Cruz’ with a bridge connecting the island to the mainland providing easy access for the island people living there or for the many tourists that visit the island for vacations.

The municipal district of Itamaraca is within the metropolitan region of Recife along with other neighbouring municipals such as Recife itself, Olinda, Jaboatao dos Guararapes, Abreu e Lima, Paulista, Igarassu, Itapissuma, Cabo de Santo Agostinho, Ipojuca, Camaragibe, Sao Lourenço da Mata, Araçoiaba and Moreno.

The name Itamaraca was chosen by the native Indians on the island and translates to ‘singing stone’ in Tupi.

When you want to visit Recife by car it will take approximately 40 minutes to reach areas such as Boa Viagem and the International Airport of Guararapes which are approximately 45km’s away.

The population of Itamaraca is just short of 20,000 inhabitants although during high holiday season in Brazil the island population can easily double during this time, and during the island Carnaval, reports suggest up to 500,000 people will visit the island.

Major tourist attractions on Itamaraca island include the Forte Orange built by the Dutch many centuries ago, Vila Velha, which is a quaint little village on top of the coconut fringed hills along the banks of the Santa Cruz Canal, and ‘Caroa do Aviao’,  which can be reached within 5 minutes by boat from the Forte Orange.
