Salvador city in Brazil's North East region (Sao Salvador da Baía de Todos os Santos) was founded in 1549 and became the first capital city of Brazil up until 1763 when Rio de Janeiro took over administration.
When walking through the old alleys and streets of Salvador's historical centre in the Pelourinho neighbourhood you will be witness to the constructions of the XVIII and XIX centuries: large old houses formerly belonging to sugar barons, beautiful baroque churches and majestic public buildings that serve as stage for the people who preserve it's cultural roots and take them to the streets, sharing them with visitors. Capoeira, acarajé, patuá, candomblé, atabaque, moqueca, bobó and berimbau are some of the words that manifest the cultural riches of Salvador and that may be better understood by simply answering a question that is part of a song by one of Brazil's greatest composers, Dorival Caymmi: "have you been to Bahia yet?"
Back to the streets again you will find the huge parties that Salvadorians are so passionate for. Salvador has an intense calendar of popular events throughout the year although mostly well known for the New Year's Eve celebrations and the spectacular Carnival that they host every year, which is reputably the biggest in the world!
Salvador is a very cosmopolitan city and caters for every taste due to it being one of the most sought after destinations in Brazil for tourists from all other regions of the country as well as abroad. The visitor can choose between high-end hotels to more charming Pousadas within the old historical buildings, and together with it's restaurants and street-stands that serve delicious regional delicacies, the visitor can find any type of dish ranging from French, Italian, Portuguese and Japanese amongst others.
