Manaus Information
Manaus is the capital city of Amazonas State in the Northwestern corner of Brazil located 3,940 kilometres (2,168 miles) from the capital city of Brasilia.
The State is situated at the confluence of the Amazon and Negro rivers.
Manaus is the most populated city of Amazonas State and is also an extremely popular ecotourist destination.
Manaus city was founded in 1669 and named 'Fort of São José do Rio Negro', elevating to town status in 1832 being then given the name of "Manaus", which actually means "mother of the gods". Thereafter, legally transformed into a city in October of 1848 and given the name 'Cidade da Barra do Rio Negro'. It was only in September of 1856 that the city reverted back to the current day name of Manaus
